The PLDT Smart Foundation's Gabay Guro Program has recently won an Anvil Award of Merit in recognition of its achievements as an outstanding public relations program aimed at improving education in the country in a sustainable way.

The Anvil Awards are given every year by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines. They seek to recognize excellent public relations programs and tools that support and encourage good values and genuine service for the society.

The Gabay Guro (2G) program, which was created in 2007 through the initiative of PLDT employee-volunteers mostly from the PLDT Managers Club Inc., aims to uplift the lives of the teachers across the country through its six core pillars:  (1) educational grants, (2) training, (3) teachers' tribute cards, (4) livelihood, (5) broadbanding and computerization of public schools and (6) housing.

In 2010, 2G has provided educational grants to 268 scholars from various universities in the country. There are already 23 partner schools/state universities nationwide. The various training programs, particularly those on English proficiency, creative teaching techniques conducted in Dumaguete and Basay, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Bataan, Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Bacoor, Cavite, Cebu and Davao have helped over 1,000 teachers become more effective educators.

Teachers in remote areas now have broadband internet connections, giving them instant access to research tools and teaching aids.

Last September 30, 2010, 2G, the Government of Daet headed by City Mayor Tito Sarion and Education Secretary Brother Armin A. Luistro, FSC, inked an agreement for a pioneer housing project for teachers. 2G has partnered with many other local government units and companies to support the core pillars of the program.
