Chairman
Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan,
President and CEO, PLDT and Smart

Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan has been widely recognized for his outstanding career that spans business, academe, charitable, non-government, arts and culture, sports and health organizations. He was named the "Management Man of the Year 2005" by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), primarily for being an exemplary Filipino capable of effective and ethical leadership and of competing with the best in the international business community.

He has received numerous other prestigious wards including the Ten Outstanding Young Men in the Philippines (TOYM) for International Finance (1983), the Presidential Pamana ng Pilipino Award by the Office of the President of the Philippines (1996), Honorary Doctorate in Humanities by the San Beda College (2002), Best CEO in the Philippines by Institutional Investor (2004), CEO of the Year (Philippines) by Biz News Asia (2004), People of the Year by People Asia Magazine (2004), Distinguished World Class Businessman Award by the Association of Makati Industries, Inc. (2005), Order of Lakandula (Rank of a Komandante) by the Office of the President of the Philippines (2006) and Honorary Doctorate in Humanities by the Xavier University (2007).  Recently, he was voted as Corporate Executive of the Year (Philippines) at the 2007 Best-Managed Companies and Corporate Governance Polls conducted by Asia Money.

A cum laude graduate from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Economics, Mr. Pangilinan founded Hong-Kong based conglomerate First Pacific Company Ltd. in 1981 and also serves as Chairman of PLDT, Smart, Metro Pacific Corporation, Landco Pacific Corporation, social action organization Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), and Filipino sports group Lead to Gold Foundation.

Mr. Pangilinan graduated cum laude from the Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. He received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania.

President
Mr. Butch Meily

Mr. Rene "Butch" S. Meily joined the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company in 2000 as Vice President and Special Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. In 2004, he was seconded to the Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. as Adviser on outsourcing. He assumed the post of president of the PLDT-Smart Foundation in January, 2008.

Prior to joining PLDT, Mr. Meily served as Vice President of Communications for TLC Beatrice International, a New York-based, multinational food company. He has worked with several New York PR firms including Burson-Marsteller, GCI Group, Ruder, Finn and Rotman and Howard Rubenstein.  He was President of the Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce, one of the oldest bilateral business organizations in the U.S. He is a graduate of the Ateneo and has an M.A. in Communications from the University of Florida. He received Florida's Alumnus of Distinction award in 2000 and was its 2003 Freedom Forum Distinguished Visiting Professor.

Atty. Rene G. Bañez
Senior Vice President, PLDT
Head for Administration and Materials Management, PLDT and Smart

PLDT Senior Vice President Atty. Rene G. Bañez is currently the head of Administration and Materials Management for both PLDT and Smart. Prior to this position he served as Chief Governance Officer for PLDT from 2004 to 2007 and as Senior Vice President for Support Services and Tax Management.

Prior to joining PLDT, Bañez was a Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Internal revenue. He also served in various executive positions for Metro Pacific Management Services, Inc. and Isla Lipana & Co./ PriceWaterhouseCoopers.  He also currently teaches various subjects in Taxation and Corporate Governance at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law and Business.

Bañez received his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from Ateneo de Manila University. He has published various papers on the Philippines Tax System and Corporate Governance in the Philippines.

Atty. Richard N. Ferrer
President and CEO, Medical Doctors, Inc.

Atty. Richard N. Ferrer is the President and CEO of Medical Doctors Inc. which owns and operates the Makati Medical Center. Prior to this position, he served as First Vice President – Office of the Chairman, PLDT and President and CEO of the PSF.   

Atty. Ferrer graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pangasinan, Dagupan City, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Political Science.  He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law and his Master in Management degree from the Asian Institute of Management. He attended various post-graduate courses at the University of Michigan, the Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship, Japan, and the Stanford-National University of Singapore. 

He is a member of the Board of Trustees and Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors and Fellow of the Institute of Solidarity in Asia. He is also a member of the Board of Visitors of the Philippine Military Academy.

Ray C. Espinosa
Director, PLDT
President and CEO, ePLDT, Inc.

Atty. Ray C. Espinosa is a director of PLDT and the President and CEO of ePLDT, Inc., PLDT's Information and Communications Technology arm.

Atty. Espinosa has received various professional honors and awards as one of the leading market lawyers in the Philippines by Asia Law & Practice (2000 and 2001), Euromoney (2000), and Asia Pacific Legal 500 (1999/2000).

Prior to joining PLDT, Atty. Espinosa was a partner at the Sycip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan law office and he also served as a Foreign Associate for Convington & Burling (Washington, D.C., U.S.A). Espinosa has a Masters of Laws from the University of Michigan Law School and he obtained his Bachelor of Laws from Ateneo de Manila University, passing the Philippine Bar Examinations with First Place ranking.

Ramon R. Isberto
Head, PLDT Media and Smart Public Affairs Group

Mr. Ramon R. Isberto is the public affairs head of PLDT and Smart. His media experience spans 17 years of work in newspapers, wire service, television and public relations.  He was a special sections editor of a leading Philippine business daily and Manila bureau chief of an international wire service covering not only domestic events, but also regional and international development issues.  His was executive producer of a leading public affairs program and a talk show host of a business and general affairs morning program.  He also served as the vice president for public affairs of a major broadcast network.

Outside of the PLDT Group, Mr. Isberto is a fellow of the Social Weather Stations, an independent opinion poll organization, a member of the National Press Club, the Philippine Futuristic Society, and the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines.

Ma. Victoria Rufino-Buenaventura, Trustee

Multi -awarded visual artist, writer, concert producer and businesswoman Ms. Ma. Victoria Rufino-Buenaventura has held numerous solo exhibitions in the Philippines, France and the USA, showcasing her romantic and luminous watercolor paintings and mixed media artworks of landscapes, seascapes and nature. She has also published books and she has a weekly opinion column "Beyond Brushstrokes" for Business World.

Ms. Rufino-Buenaventura is a Liberal Arts honors graduate of Marymount Manhattan, New York where she majored in Theater Arts and English Literature. She has also studied Chinese painting and western waster color techniques, photography and various art workshops with different masters in Spain and New York.

Rafael C. Lopa, Trustee

Rafael C. Lopa is the Executive Assistant of the Office of former President of the Philippines Corazon C. Aquino, working for her various involvements with civil society organizations, church initiatives and ongoing socio-political work. He is also the Executive Director of the Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. Foundation which is involved in various people empowerment and nation building projects.

Mr. Lopa is also the President and CEO of Pulse Asia, Inc., a research and polling firm that monitors perceptions of Filipinos on various social, political and economic issues and concerns. He is also a board member of the Philippine Council for NGO Certification.

Mr. Lopa obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Inter-Disciplinary Studies from the Ateneo de Manila University.

Anabelle L. Chua
Senior Vice President and Treasurer, PLDT

Ms. Chua is the Treasurer and Senior Vice President of PLDT with overall responsibility for treasury, corporate finance, and investor relations functions in the Finance group, and concurrently holds the position of Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Smart.   She has over 15 years of work experience in the areas of corporate finance, treasury, financial control and credit risk management.

Prior to joining PLDT, Ms. Chua was a Vice President at Citibank, where she worked for ten years. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines with Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Accountancy and topped the October 1982 CPA Board Examinations.

PLDT-Smart Foundation Officers

Atty. Rogelio V. Quevedo, Vice President

Rogelio V. Quevedo has been a distinguished member of the legal academe before he decided to concentrate in the emerging field of telecommunications.  He finished his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1981 from the University of the Philippines' College of Law and was among the topnotchers of the bar examinations of that year.  He became Chief for Intelligence Division of the Commission on Immigration and Deportation from 1982-1986.  He proceeded to take up his Masters of Science in Strategic Business Economics at the Center for Research and Communications and eventually, his Master of Laws at the Louisiana State University Paul Hebert Law Center. In 1995, he graduated Doctor of the Science of Jurisprudence from the Tulane University School of Law.

Quevedo's expertise has earned for him many commendations from his peers at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Foundation for Judicial Excellence and has been awarded several fellowships in distinguished American schools such as the Academy of International and Comparative Law of the University of Texas in Dallas and the Louisiana State University Paul Hebert Law Center.  He became a member of the Faculty of the UP College of Law, Director of the Bar Review Institute of the UP Law Center and Professorial lecturer at the Ateneo Law School.

Formerly the Group Head of Wholesale Business handling the International Services, interconnection, Carrier Relations and International Roaming Services of Smart and PLDT, He was also the former Group Head of Regulatory Management Office of Smart & PLDT. At present, he is the Director for Special Projects, in the Office of the Chairman of PLDT.

Atty. Ma. Lourdes C. Rausa-Chan, Corporate Secretary

Atty. Ma. Lourdes C. Rausa-Chan is a Senior Vice President, the Corporate Affairs and Legal Services Head and Corporate Secretary of PLDT. She also serves as Corporate Secretary of several subsidiaries of PLDT, including Piltel. Prior to joining PLDT in November 1998, she was the Group Vice President for Legal Affairs of Metro Pacific Corporation, and the Corporate Secretary of some of its subsidiaries. Ms. Rausa-Chan obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of the Philippines.

Ms. June Cheryl A. Cabal-Furigay, Treasurer

Mr. Jun R. Florencio, Internal Auditor

Jun R. Florencio earned his Bachelor's Degree in Commerce Major in Accounting from the University of Santo Tomas, and has attended the Management Development Program of the Asian Institute of Management.  

He is a Certified Public Accountant and had external auditing experience during his stint at SGV & Co. His exposure to internal auditing started when he joined the CFC / URC group of companies which are now part of JGSummit. In 1979, he joined the Arabian American Oil Company in Saudi Arabia where he worked for more than four years at various levels in Contract Review and Cost Compliance.

In 1986, he joined Eastern Telecoms where he gained valuable telecom industry experience in the areas of Credit & Collection Management, Billing, Information Systems, Treasury and Controllership, and where he attained the level of Assistant Vice President, for Finance.

In 1995, he joined Smart Communications as Financial Comptroller and Head of the Finance Department. Among his major accomplishments at Smart was the implementation of an integrated Financial Control and Enterprise Resource Management system.

In 1999, Florencio was appointed Vice President and Head of Financial Reporting and Control of PLDT. After he had modernized the financial and cost accounting reports and improved the financial accounting controls, he was promoted the following year as First Vice President and Head of the Audit and Assurance Group which included the Internal Audit organization and the then newly created Revenue Assurance Sector. He spearheaded the streamlining and modernization of the internal audit organization and the introduction of innovative approaches to fraud detection and network protection.

Florencio was promoted to Senior Vice President in June 2005, and was designated to lead the Internal Audit function for both PLDT and Smart starting January 2006.

Ms. Madonna J. Hernandez, Executive Secretary

Anthony N. Pangilinan, is better known as a media personality, having been a TV News Anchor for over 8 years, a pageant and event host since the early 90's, a radio and TV program host, and a personal endorser for select products and programs, and an awardee for Best Host by The Aliw Awards Foundation.

Pangilinan, however, is a professional management trainer, motivational speaker, productivity consultant and lead consultant for management programs for companies such as McCann-Erickson, Leo Burnett, and the Lopez Group of Companies. He is President and Chief Disturber of BusinessWorks, Inc., a 15-year old company dedicated to High-Impact Training Seminars, Learning Events and Hypermedia Productions. He is also a Director and the Chief Trainer of Inspire Consultancy, the official licensee of all John Maxwell corporate programs in the Philippines.

This Ulirang Ama Awardee for 2000 and Huwarang Ama Awardee for 2004 acknowledges however, that he is best known as the husband of multi-awarded actress and "super-mom" Maricel Laxa and the father of four lovely children, Ella, Donny, Hannah and Benjamin.
